What is Worship?

Worship has nothing to do with singing, though we can worship our hearts out when we sing.

Worship has nothing to do with praying, though we can worship deeply when we pray.

Worship has nothing to do with giving, though we can worship sincerely when we pray.

Worship has nothing to do with studying, though we can worship intimately when we study.

Worship has everything to do with God.

Worship needs an object. An item to be worshiped. In the case of the God-fearing Believer, that object is not an object, but a Being. A spiritual Being. God himself.

We don’t worship statues of God. We worship God.

We don’t worship words from God. We worship God.

We don’t worship miracle from God. We worship God.

Worship means to give worth to something. Worth-ship.

God deserves infinite worth-ship ascribed to Him. Why? Because He is infinitely worthy.

Worthy to be praised. Worthy to be loved. Worthy to be followed.

Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. (Psalm 29.2 ESV)

We don’t worship because He has done something for us, though He has done great things. We respond to the who, not the what. Though, to make this complex, we can worship God by thanking Him for the great things He has done. But the importance is on the doer of the great things, and no on the great things.

God is great.

God is big.

Lord, let my worship be big as you are big. Though I am small, let my heart worship You in a big way. Let my heart be ever turned to You. Let my ears be ever attuned to Your voice. Let my mouth resonate with Your heart. Let my feet be ever ready to follow where You lead.

Worship is not necessarily what we do, though we can worship by what we do.
