Movie Night
Inspired by the ever so thorough Mudpuppy and his enormous list of movie reviews, here’s my take on the last few netflix movies I’ve seen.
The Mission: (1986) I really enjoyed this one. I have heard for years that this film’s score was incredible and I wasn’t let down. It was very moving. A younger Robert De Niro, Jeremy Irons, and Liam Neeson made appearances in this film. De Niro and Irons carry the film well. If you like pre-twentieth century films, you’ll enjoy this one. Since it was a bit older the special effects were so-so, but the locations were dazzling. This film won an Oscar for Best Cinematography in 1986. (4 out of 5)
¡Three Amigos!: (1986) You can’t beat Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Short for laughs. This was a “cute” comedy that I enjoyed watching with my wife. We’re both Steve Martin fans and althogh he’s done funnier, this was a good chill movie. There are a few really funny parts, and mostly chuckle to yourself humor rounds out the rest of the movie. (3 out of 5)
Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed: (2008) Loved it. Ben Stein is so dry but so hilarious. This was definitely a well-thought out and informed film. I recommend it highly. If you loved Win Ben Stein’s money, you’ll love this, because not only is it typical Stein, it’s so very enlightening. The debate over Intelligent Design is an intense one whether you are a Creationist or not, this film really does a good job of painting both sides of the ID vs. Darwinism debate. (5 out of 5)
A Good Year: (2006) This was pretty good. I queued it for my wife, and figured since I’m a Russell Crowe fan I could stand it. However, it trned out to be a pretty funny and thoughtful film. I love the “idea” behind vineyards and vintage wines even though I’m the furthest thing from a wine drinker, so this movie was really interesting to me. (4 out of 5)
Be Kind Rewind: (2008) Loved it. If you like Jack Black, you’ll probably enjoy this film. It’s not over the top funny, but Black and Mos Def’s chemistry works for this film. Kind of a quirky hometown feeling throughout. Like I said, loved it. (4.5 out of 5)
