Acoustic Upright Washtub Bass: In Action
OK, so it’s been a while since I posted some acoustic upright washtub bass information, so I thought I’d give you kind of an update on how we actually used it.
I participated, with a few friends of mine, in a cover show at a local joint here in Valdosta, GA called Buffington’s. The idea of the show, Under the Covers, was to have bands play all covers that night. I toyed around with the idea of doing some top 40 type stuff from over the years, but then decided that to get the most sing-a-long action we’d do covers from the past. We started in the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and threw in an 80s tune for kicks.
Definitely fun stuff. Anyways, one of our bass players at church played upright bass many years ago and so we decided to build an upright bass. We decided to build it around a washtub body. We also decided to use it in this covers show and what follows are some videos from that night, complete with our washtub bass in action.

We had a great time that night the theme Under the Covers lent itself to a great PJ party atmosphere. Admission was “Wear Your Best PJs” - fun stuff.
You might need to wear headphones to pick up the bass on the audio.

That rocks - good call on the singalong-ability. I can’t believe that thing that thing actually stayed in tune - sorry don’t mean to question your craftsmanship. On the contrary, it’s pretty impressive.

@Billy: Jimmy (the bass player) actually created a tuner setup that held tune pretty well. He actually had to fine tune it with a wrench. Anyways, it was definitely a fun project.
