Groups

At House of Joy we have 4 basic kinds of groups for people to get to know one another and grow beyond our Sunday morning gathering.

Connection Groups

Connection groups are all about having fun together.  A connection group is an excellent way to meet new people and begin building lasting friendships.  It is a perfect first step in getting involved with our groups.  A great example of a connection group would be a group which meets once a month to hang out and have fun!

Study Groups

Study groups focus on certain topics or themes to study together regularly.  These groups are discussion driven and are a great way to grow spiritually together.  Typically they meet once a week or twice a month and still include plenty of socializing and fun along the way!  An example of a Study group is our Breakaway Café which is a discussion based study designed for college and young career.

Recreation Groups

Recreation (or Rec) groups focus on a hobby or activity rather than a topic or theme.  Meeting times vary depending on the hobby or activity as well as any costs associated with it.  An example of a Recreation group is our Zumba Fitness group which meets twice a week to sweat it out together!

Class Groups

Class groups are designed to meet for a specific period of time and focus on a single topic or theme to study.  These groups have a specific beginning and end time and might include a little homework!  Two great examples of our Class groups are Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and Dr. Emerson Eggerich’s Love & Respect.

Lead or Host a Group

First and foremost, a Group Leader is not an expert!  (That goes double for Rec Leaders!)  They do not have to know all of the answers nor is it their place to give them.  Essentially, a Group Leader’s main task is to bring people together for a common purpose.  This could be to study the Bible or ride bikes, to simply enjoy a meal or to serve in the community. While a Group Leader doesn’t have to be an expert, he does have to be passionate about people and committed to the purpose of that particular group.

Since we have 4 different types of groups the responsibilities and expectations for each group leader or host will be different.  However, we do have a few common expectations that leaders and hosts adhere to:

  1. Attend all Group Leader/Host Training events.
  2. Stay in contact with group members and potential members throughout the week/month as appropriate for communication, encouragement, prayer, etc, through our CCB resource as well as phone calls, email, texting, facebook, etc.
  3. Prepare for each meeting in advance through study/resource gathering and prayer.
  4. Meet with the Group’s Coordinator regularly for communication and coaching.
  5. Hold group accountable to group expectations.
